The Secret to

Healthy Fasting

Fasting is a powerful way to gain more energy, lose weight, and rest your digestive system. It has been a healing tool of holistic health practitioners for centuries, and research has proven its incredible benefits. Today, however, we are surrounded by food, and this can make fasting a challenge for most of us.

If you’ve ever started a fast and stopped due to intense hunger or low energy, this is the blog for you! I’m going to tell you a secret that will help you become successful at any kind of fast you choose. Not only that, but this habit alone (used in conjunction with fasting or not) will improve your health in countless ways.

The secret is this…add a Superfood supplement to your day.

That’s it! It is the easiest and most powerful thing you can do to achieve a successful fast and elevate your health. Before we dive into the specific Superfood I use, let me clarify what I mean by fasting.

What is Fasting?

There are different types of fasting. A total fast is when you abstain from food for several days. I like to do this once or twice a year for 3 – 5 days at a time...but only with the help of my Superfood!

A total fast is like a reboot for your health. It allows the digestive system to take a much-needed break, and it can be used to reset your intentions to eat healthy. For example, after eating richer foods during a vacation or holiday, a 3 day fast can be a simple way to lose that extra pound or two and get back on track. A fast can also be a spiritual experience by devoting more time to prayer and Bible study when you would normally be eating. People often have breakthroughs in their emotional and spiritual health during a fast.

Another type of fasting is intermittent fasting, which is eating within a more narrow window of time during the day, typically eating during a window of 6 – 8 hours with 14 – 16 hours of fasting during each 24-hour period. This can also give the digestive system a break, help balance blood sugar, and support weight loss.

Whether you decide to do a total or intermittent fast, it’s important to keep your energy up and your cravings at bay so you can have a good experience. I’ve found the best way to do both is to include a Superfood supplement in your day.

How a Superfood Can Help

The term Superfood is used loosely these days to describe everything from walnuts to blueberries, but I just call those real, whole foods.

What I am talking about is a specific Superfood that is so rich in nutrients, it’s affectionately referred to as “Nature’s Miracle Food” – Spirulina. I have a special love for this blue-green algae because it reversed my IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) symptoms 25 years ago and sparked my passion for nutrition.

Spirulina is unique because it contains no fat or carbohydrates, but it is rich in absorbable protein, vitamins, and minerals. This miracle food comes as a supplement, making it easy to pop a handful of tablets anytime you feel hungry or weak. Unlike eating, Spirulina will not stimulate your appetite or contribute enough calories to break a fast. What it will do is satisfy your body’s need for nutrients to help you stay on track!

Spirulina is naturally energizing because it contains protein in its most bioavailable form – amino acids. These amino acids are quickly absorbed into your blood stream satisfying your body’s need for complete protein. Spirulina is also rich in B vitamins, which drive cellular metabolism and contribute to energy production.

Another perk of Spirulina is that is acts as a natural appetite suppressant. Often, we overeat because we are malnourishment. Today’s food supply is largely devoid of nutrients and as a result, our cells may be starving. When our cells need nutrients, they send out signals for more food. The way to break this cycle is to give our body the nutrition it needs, and Spirulina does this in a profoundly simple way.

In addition to all of these benefits, Spirulina is perfect for your fast because it is cleansing and detoxifying. A fast will help your body rest, cleanse, and heal. Adding Spirulina magnifies these efforts exponentially.

How to Use Spirulina

Spirulina is food, so don’t be shy with these little tablets. They offer powerful fuel for your body. During a fast, I like to take 8 – 12 tablets when I feel a hunger pang or a slump in energy, which is typically 4 – 5 times a day.

You can also take 6 tablets at night to support your natural detoxification processes as you sleep. If you wake up with low blood sugar after a day of fasting or even intermittent fasting, taking Spirulina before bed can help stabilize your blood sugar so you wake up refreshed.

While this article focuses on fasting because it is such a powerful healing tool, Spirulina can be taken every day for its energizing and detoxification benefits. I developed the habit of taking 18 small tablets a day when I was suffering from IBS in my 20’s and it dramatically changed my health.

Give Spirulina a try either in addition to a fast or simply added to your daily nutrition regimen. You will be blown away by the power of this incredible Superfood!
